The first ever virtual Women 20 Summit, will bring together experts, representatives, and leaders from a variety of disciplines to share, innovate, accelerate and inspire dynamic solutions to advancing women towards a more equitable future.
This year is momentous for the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment, marked by the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive blueprint for advancing women’s and girls’ rights globally. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has put the world at a crossroads in achieving the goals and targets set in this policy framework, as well as in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Unless urgent action is taken, the pandemic will continue to exacerbate gender inequalities, expose deep-seated vulnerabilities in social, political and economic systems, and roll back any gains made over recent decades. Once again, women will be disproportionately negatively impacted and left to bear the brunt of a multidimensional crisis.
With this context in mind, the W20 summit has two objectives this year. The first is to provide a space for women around the world to share and scale solutions to women’s empowerment through financial inclusion, digital inclusion, labor inclusion, inclusive decision making, and entrepreneurship. The second is to deliver a communiqué to the G20 leaders that provides them with a set of recommendations on how best to expedite economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by supporting the social and economic empowerment of women.
